Here is my new favorite Christmas carol

I first fell in love with this song when I heard Charlotte Church sing it on her CD, Dream a Dream.

The Coventry Carol

Lullay, Thou little tiny Child,
By, by, lully, lullay.
Lullay, Thou little tiny Child.
By, by, lully, lullay.

O sisters, too, how may we do,
For to preserve this day;
This poor Youngling for whom we sing,
By, by, lully, lullay.

Herod the King, in his raging,
Charged he hath this day;
His men of might, in his own sight,
All children young, to slay.

Then woe is me, poor Child, for Thee,
And ever mourn and say;
For Thy parting, nor say nor sing,
By, by, lully, lullay.

Here is a website with the music for this carol.
I prefer it sung a little slower than this midi plays it.

Here is a website that has another verse at the end of the carol.

And here is a midi that plays the song slowly. :)

  1. Oh, I love that carol. I first sang it about 25 years ago when I was in a Madrigal Dinner that my college presented. Isn't the melody haunting?

    Thanks for posting it!

  2. Thank you for the words! My husband played this lastnight at the Christmas party and I was just thinking I'd never heard it before.

  3. O, I'm so glad that everyone likes this carol!

    Thank you for saying I have good taste! My sisters would disagree with that, though. (I don't mean that they don't like this song; they do, I just mean that they say, sometimes, that I've got dreadful taste:)
