Today the First Year Girl and I spent some time home alone. I was rather preoccupied sorting and pricing items for our antique mall booth so FYG was left to entertain herself. She wrapped a couple gifts for the HeadMaster, and then wandered off to her bedroom. Checking on her a bit later I found her reading The Good Master by Kate Seredy. I loved this book (probably still would, too, if I re-read it). I bought a beautiful hardback copy at a yard sale with my own money during a long car trip; unfortunately I get somewhat car sick and thus had to wait and read this book while we got gas or during potty breaks while waiting for my turn.
Reading it introduced me to Hungary. I loved it so much that a few years later when I applied to the International Pen Friend organization I requested a pen pal from Hungary. I got one too. We didn't keep in touch very well, but getting her letters was a definite treat. I think some day I'll apply to IPF again... and perhaps ask for a Hungarian pen-pal once more.
I did International Pen Friends too! I had several, but the one from Australia and I kept at it the best. It wasn't until we both started college that we lost touch. I hadn't thought about that in ages.......
ReplyDeleteyes, I knew about "The Singing Tree." I loved it too. :)
ReplyDeleteOoh, I love Kate Seredy! Have you ever read "The Open Gate"? It is, unfortunately, very difficult to find and I am lucky enough to own a copy. I requested a copy for Christmas and my father informed me when I opened it that our bookseller friend had a great deal of trouble finding it and it was a very old copy so please be carefuly with it. (i.e., don't read while eating. Drat.)
ReplyDeleteAnyway, it's delightful book.
