This Was Going to Be a News and Views Post

I have somewhat neglected the 'news and views' side of things of late. There hasn't been a great deal of very interesting news jumping out at me. I'm in the mood for jingle bells, hot cocoa, cookies, and Christmas crafts, not earthquakes, mass murderers on trial, political hijinks, and the latest on homeland security.

But still, I meant to do a news and views post tonight. The HG took three of her siblings over to the grandparents to practice Piano. The Cherub is nestled all snug in her chair and does not wish to be bothered. Equuschick is doing the dishes. The FYB was playing cheerfully with his cars on the floor, so I thought I could sneak back to the computer and post away. The blog isn't working for us very well. And then the FYB came up to me and snuggled his head on my shoulder and said, "I'm lonely and I don't have anybody to play with. Won't you do something with me?"

What's a mother to do?

Right now this mother is hastily typing away while the boy counts forty marshmallows into a saucepan. When he's finished that, we will add:
1/4 cup of margarine

We will heat that all together and stir over the stove until it is melted- as for rice crispy treats.
Then we will add green food coloring until we like the shade of green and then we will add:

6 cups corn flakes or some approximation (ours came from teh health food store where they were on sale for .59 cents)

We will mix that well and spoon them out by individual spoonfuls onto a greased cookie sheet or a large metal tray covered with waxed paper. These are holly leaves.

Then we will put three "Red Hots" (cinnamon candies) on each cookie. These are holly berries. (Holly Berries)

If we are feeling very patient we will refrigerate them. In our house all we have to do to refrigerate anything in the winter is open the kitchen door into the "summer kitchen," the room where our dryer lives. It's freezing, quite literally, in there. The entire room is one giant ice box.

But I expect we won't be feeling very patient, so we will eat at least one, all warm and gooey, before we chill the rest. I will very generously share my red hots with my son because I do not like them and he does.

He has now counted 40 marshmallows (twice to be sure), measured the butter, greased the pan, and found the green food coloring.

I am glad that God is watching over the world.

Update: We finished the cookies and each ate one warm and gooey- but by the time they were done the FYB didn't want anymore and was requesting some snuggle time because his head and throat hurt. His temp reached 102, and he's still feeling 'puny' today.

  1. And I imagine that God is glad that you are watching over a certain young boy!! Obviously, His trust was well-placed!

  2. We had a "cookie caboodle" after church Sunday night and my Ds2 was fascinated with the wreath cookies. He would grab the cookie, pick off a redhot, hand me the cookie, then proceed to lick the redhot until he got bored. Then he'd throw that one on the floor and grab for another. When he exhausted the supply of redhots on the cookie I was holding, he went begging. Everyone thought he wanted a bite of cookie, when all he wanted was to lick the redhots!

By the way, I love redhots! When I was in Girl Scouts, I won a blue ribbon at the State Fair for my apple butter. The secret? Two extra handfuls of redhots when Grandma wasn't looking!!

  3. Would those be full size marshmallows or minis? (I think I might make this for the Christmas cookie exchange this weekend.)

  4. Laura, those are full sized marshmallows. You could just use a bag of marshmallows, it's almost the same thing.

  5. I LOVE those cornflake treats. A friend used to use them for movie treats instead of popcorn.

And they color wonderfully for themed parties as well.
