What About Hair?

We talked a lot about make-up (wow). So what about hair?

Here's what I do for mine: I wash it. Sometimes I put a dab of conditioner on the ends and don't rinse that out. I wait til it dries, and then I comb it. I usually put the front back in one or two barrettes, but not always. As I mentioned elsewhere, I do wear a head-covering. JennyAnyDots trims the ends for me once or twice a year. Sometimes I braid it.

Sometimes I rub vinegar into my scalp and wrap it with a warm, wet, towel. This is for dandruff. Sometimes I add a bit of baking soda to the shampoo if I want to feel extra scoured, such as after a sweaty day in the garden.

HEre's what I don't do:
Professional cuts
dye
perms
blow dry
curling iron
curlers

Here's why:

Time, mostly. Like make-up, it's not exactly that I consider these things a useless and utterly frivolous waste of time (of course, in moderation. The girl I knew in high school who spent three hours every morning on Farah hair, that was utterly frivolous. That girl was NOT me. I only spent one hour on my Farah hair). It's just that hair and make-up stuff is doing something I find personally boring and it's taking time away from stuff I find interesting- reading, blogging, admiring my flowers, talking to my family, cleaning my fingernails...

Money, certainly- although I could afford a professional cut and perm now, there were decades where I couldn't, and I could afford it by spending less money on things I like more- whole coffee beans, books, real butter, family passes to a museum... Not interested. Now for somebody else, the WOW factor for a professional cut and perm may be worth more than the WOW factor for real butter and a family pass to the art museum. I can't see it myself, but we can't all be the same.

I don't like dye. I don't like the thought of all those chemicals in my scalp. It's an easy decision for me, the girls tell me I have some gray hairs, but only a few and they are all on the back of my head where I don't see them. My mother is 69 and still mostly a Brunette. She has some white hairs- but so much dark hair still that people still can't believe she doesn't dye her hair. So maybe I would feel differently if I'd went white at 40 or something, but I don't think so.

I haven't gotten quite brave enough to go all out with Kim's no-shampoo method. Yet. So basically my hair is longish, unfortunately thin, and straight as string, and of what color pleases God (a rough quote- recognize it?).

How about you?
