The Boy came running upstairs and made me come outside to show me something really cool. I was a little bit wary at first, as his definition of "really cool" and mine are not always in agreement. Buuut I have to admit that this time I agreed with him: this praying mantis is REALLY cool.
As perspective, that is the Boy's hand about an inch away from it. He has a big hand, though, so we tried to measure the praying mantis. It's about 5 inches long.
Aren't they beautiful creatures? Did you know that the bigger preying manti can eat birds? Crazy wonderful creations of our Maker!
ReplyDeleteOn one of our trips home to the west coast several summers ago, my oldest dd was playing in my parents' driveway with us, and all of a sudden we saw a small praying mantis (I thought it was big until I saw your picture). I had never seen one in person before, so I was excited. We have a precious picture of dd holding it on her hand (she was about 4 years old). She loved bugs then, and she still does at almost 11!
ReplyDeleteI really love the praying mantis! They are useful little creatures. The remind me of stick bugs, which also fascinate me.
