Child's Calendar Beautiful, First and Second Year, December

WJFR at Every Waking Hour has linked to two good reads on Christmas.

One of them is

Apologies- I accidentally hit 'publish post' before I was done- I thought I'd stopped it in time, but just learned this post has been up, unfinished, for hours. Blogger is working that sluggishly, and our server is also reluctant to get moving in snowy weather. Our service provider is also most unsatisfactory this morning and my Christian Spirit is deeply, deeply tried. But I shall not be ruled by these external events, however IRRITATING they are, NO. I shan't. I shall be in a better mood. I will, I will.

Meanwhile, on to more pleasant topics (which is how one forces oneself into a better mood in the first place- make like Scarlet and 'think about it tomorrow'). I have been going through the Child's Calendar Beautiful for December. Depending on the age and length of the poem The Child's Calendar usually lists two or three monthly selections for each year. For December I've gone through and listed just the first selection for each year. Now it's time to go through and do the second (and sometimes 3rd) selections.

Because they are so short, I'm including several from year 1 and one from year 2 here:

First Year, December:

Nonsense Alphabet

G was a goat
Who was spotted with brown:
When he did not lie still
He walked up and down.

g!
Good little goat!

H

H was a hat
Which was all on one side;
Its crown was too high,
And its brim was too wide.

h!
Oh, what a hat!

~Edward Lear

Alphabetic Gems

Goodness shows in blushes bright,
Or in eyelids dropping down,
Like a violet from the light;
Badness, in a sneer or frown.

Phoebe Cary

Hearts like doors will ope with ease
To very, very little keys,
And don't forget that two are these;
"I thank you" and "if you please."
~Unknown

Second Year, December (previously we shared The Two Little Stockings, there is one more December selection after this short little piece):

What Makes Christmas
Little wishes on white wings,
Little gifts -- such tiny things--
Just one little heart that sings,
Make a merry Christmas.

~Dorothy Howe
