The picture ought to be self-explanatory. There is no sewing, only cutting and inserting. You need one color of felt for the body of the mouse, another color for the ears, and a candy cane. You can add eyes and whiskers if you like (we probably will do this later). These hang on a tree by their cute little mouse tails. They also make adorable gift tags taped to packages.
For eyes you could use black embroidery floss and make french knots, or sew on small black buttons, or glue on wiggly eyes from another craft, or perhaps draw them with a black marker.
For whiskers you could use black embroidery floss, or snip lengths of a black pipe cleaner and snip small holes through which to put the whiskers.
The candy cane is held in place by the ears on the underside of the mouse.
You could also use these for place settings or for gift tags. It only takes a moment or two to make them.
It occurs to me that there would probably be a way to make a similar craft using a sheep shape and the candy cane would then be a shepherd's crook for those so inclined.

We have a couple of these that came on Christmas packages...I think Crayons and I might make a few extra for presents, though--thank you for the idea!
ReplyDeleteA few years ago I made a cat version of this with one of the kids--you glue together two felt shapes resembling a cat lying down, decorate as you want (we used fabric paints to put on eyes, mouths and stripes), and then the candy cane comes out the hind end to make a tail. (You leave a bit of space when you glue them together.) I guess they fall into the cute-but-kind-of-useless category, because I'm not sure what you are supposed to do with the cats after you've eaten their tails...they're a little big to go on the tree...but maybe you could insert another candy cane next year and prop kitty up somewhere among your decorations.
