Tales From the Archives

The FYG was about six, and we were reading The King's Daughter. To be honest, that book is not the literary style which I usually prefer. It's rather heavy on the moralizing and light on the literary quality. But sometimes we want a heavy dose of morality.
If the stories were too preachy I skipped them or read while editing a bit myself.

One of the stories was about how important it is not to keep secrets from your parents, and not to listen to things you knowyou would be embarrassed or ashamed for your mother to hear. When the story ended the FYG told me that a girl she knew had told her a very yucky secret once. My stomach felt like it held the contents of a rock quarry while I waited, as calmly as I could, for her to reveal this horrible secret.

The secret was only that the other little girl had wet one of our beds when her family was living with us for a while. Whew! I was relieved, but I took the opportunity to tell the FYG that she really should have told me about it when it happened.

She said, "Yes, but at that time we were not studying that book."
