Actually excited about a class & a professor...

... a happy excitement, rather than an angsty and upset excitement.

Today I bumped into (figuratively) my history professor on the way to his class. I just finished reading Barbara Tuchmann's Distant Mirror: The Calamitous 14th Century, a book I discovered in his office when I was there for an advising appointment. I told him about completing it, and asked if he had a title to recommend for the 15th century that covered the same scope as Tuchmann's book.

After thinking for a bit, and asking if there were particular countries I was interested in (England!), he said, "You could always start with Churchill's History of the English-Speaking Peoples; they're a good set to cut your teeth on."

I could have broken out into an Irish dance step then and there. So I've already read most of the books in that set... it is just SO wonderful to have a professor who is comfortable talking about real books. Here's to the hope of meeting many more such in the future.

  1. Doesn't it just do your heart happy when you think you have found a kindred spirit. Having gone to a small Christian university, I was fortunate to find kindred spirits in some faculty. Now, 18 years later, I still keep in touch with them.
