A Narrow Fellow in the Grass

My son nearly stepped on this in the yard:



It does appear to have eaten recently- observers tell me that they can see the bulge moving down as it visibly moves down.

Any idea what kind of snake?



We're thinking a striped garter or a blue striped garter snake.

  1. Hey this looks like a snake that we encountered in backwoods last September. To my husband it appears to be a garter snake. They tend to eat mice, rats, birds, lizards, gophers, squirrels, bunnies and my husband's favorite, rattlesnakes. They can bite but are not normally toxic. FYI we live where 9 out of 10 snakes are rattlers.
