About Island Story

I just came across this old email about this treasure of a book, recounting the story of how I got it.

I saw my copy at a used homeschool bookstore for 30.00, and I liked it very much, but thought that was too much. I did not pay that much for books, period, let alone used books. My husband was, after all, enlisted, and we lived on a single income. I came home, decided to look for it on the internet, and I saw copies for $225.00!!!! Gulp.
I e-mailed and left messages on the answering machine begging the store owner, pleading with her, to hold that book for me. In fact, I believe I said I was sick with longing for that book and downcast by regrets that I hadn't purchased it, and I couldn't sleep at night for thinking of it, so would she please, please, please hold it for me until I could get back there? Melodramatic over books? What? Who, me?

She did, and I picked it up a week later, and promptly began reading a couple of chapters a week to our middle two girls, who loved it.

My hubby suggested that we copy it for ourselves, and then resell it for a couple hundred. ;-)

Instead, I worked with a team of other homeschooling moms who owned copies of the treasure and put it online so everybody could have access to it for free.

The same week we completed our project and it went up online another homeschooling company began republishing the book for sale. I've always found that coincidence just a wee bit, well strange.
